Student project: School at Ernst-Reuter-Platz Bremerhaven

On the occasion of the exhibition "Seeing the Other? The Colonialist Gaze," we offered a project for students in which the participants dealt intensively with the topic of colonialism. In the first step, the 13- to 15-year-olds from the school at Ernst-Reuter-Platz in Bremerhaven looked at the photographs, selected a motif and researched a question of their own choosing. One group delved into the topic of "Women in Colonialism," while a second team worked on the topic of "Hierarchies in Colonialism." The goal was to better understand the photographs with knowledge of the historical context. In fact, the students' view sharpened after they had completed the research and picked up the photographs again and looked at them. They had developed a completely different perspective on the events, suddenly noticing many more details. Both teams presented their findings in two audio reports.
