Accessibility in the German Maritime Museum

We offer a range of services designed to make your stay in our house as pleasant as possible. On this page we inform you about our offers.

As part of our reorientation, we want to make the DSM as barrier-free as possible. By this we mean a holistic concept that takes into account the needs of different groups and different age groups.

The museum has its own car park, where parking spaces are available for people with disabilities. The entrance to the museum building can be reached via a ramp, the entry of the Cog Hall is at ground level. There are WCs for people with disabilities in the museum. Lifts take you to all levels of the exhibition. There are seating facilities in the exhibition. However, portable chairs can also be hired at the ticket office. 

There is a tactile guidance system in the exhibition. Tactile overview plans are available on each floor of the exhibition. Via tactile models, hands-on installations and digital offers, we convey our exhibition contents on the "Bremer Kogge" medially and interactively. The exhibition texts are written bilingually in German and English. In many areas you will also find texts in Braille as well as listening stations. Children's offers and child-friendly elements within the exhibition complement the mediation services and make the visit attractive for groups of mixed ages. Directly in front of the DSM in the museum harbour, our original museum ships invite young and old to get to know the maritime world of life and work on board. Unfortunately, the museum ships are not accessible by wheelchair.

Maritime research for all

We want to be a museum for everyone and make our themes and unique exhibits accessible to everyone. With the exhibition "Cog, Man & Sea" in the cog hall of our museum we have taken the first steps towards an inclusive museum. For our upcoming new exhibitions, on which we are currently working, we will continue on this path. We regularly have our exhibitions and concepts evaluated in order to optimize and expand our family-friendly and barrier-free offers. A youth and an inclusion advisory board actively support us in this process.
