Anja Binkofski

The German Maritime Museum uniquely combines museum and scientific research. In this environment, I can grow as a researcher and at the same time get an impression of museum work, always with two different audiences in mind. As a Maritime Anthropologist, I aim to think people and the sea together.“

About the person

Anja Binkofski is a Cultural Anthropologist specializing in Maritime Anthropology. Since April 2024 she has been a PhD Candidate at the German Maritime Museum and is conducting ethnographic research into the establishment of the ship recycling industry in northern Germany. Her current project combines the topic of blue economy with questions of sustainability, green change and value. Science and Technology Studies (STS) as well as knowledge access and exchange also play a role.

In her Master’s thesis, she examined the topics of sea level rise on the Halligen and planning for an ‘unknowable’ future. The thesis was rewarded the “Bremer Studienpreis” 2024. Her research interests include sea level rise, flooding, sustainable futures studies and more-than-human futures. Building on this, she is entering a new field of research with her doctoral project, in which the interactions between politics, economics and technological progress are crucial for sustainable change.
